Charlotte Curbside Brewery Services

NC closed restaurants and many other business on March 23rd, but Charlotte/Mecklenburg county went further issuing a stay-at-home order and closing all non-essential businesses starting Thursday, March 26 at 8am. A full list of North Carolina executive orders regarding COVID-19 can be found here. As of the time of this article, the proclamations are to be in effect until April 16th, but we’ll have to see if such may be extended after a reassessment.

Beer is essential!

The executive orders being enforced do allow for breweries to continue curbside and take-away services.

Restaurants for consumption off-premises. Restaurants and other facilities that prepare and serve food, but only for consumption off-premises, through such means as in- house delivery, third-party delivery, drive-through, curbside pick-up, and carry-out.

The executive orders being enforced do allow you to go out and pick up your beer.

For necessary supplies and services. To obtain necessary services or supplies for themselves and their family or household members, or to deliver those services or supplies to others, such as, by way of example only and without limitation, groceries and food, household consumer products, supplies they need to work from home, and products necessary to maintain the safety, sanitation, and essential operation of residences.

Charlotte Area Brewery Curbside Service

The list below was validated as of March 26th, but things can change quickly. Both to confirm they are open for curbside service and to have your order prepared before arrival (to minimize time waiting around others) we strongly recommend calling but have included all pertinent information available based on social media, website and phone conversations with each. Not all breweries are equally equipped to deal with this situation in the same way, so look to each for specific guidance (not that often websites are not updated quickly and so Facebook is a better source for recent updates).

The Best Hoppy Sour Beers

My favorite style at the moment is a hoppy sour and it’s fairly uncommon. I seek out places and events that focus on sours (like Sour to the People) and still find one with a decent hop character really hard to come by. Below are my top twelve favorites…

1. To ol Sur Series

Every shop I go into, I look for some To ol and while they are not well distributed in the United States, they do pop up from time to time. They were the first hoppy sour I tried (back when I really didn’t care for a hoppy flavor at all) and I’ve sought them out ever since as what remains the best of the style. I like To ol and I like Sours, so I will get anything from them I find (especially the sours) but know that not all those in the Sur series are also hoppy. Below are those I’m aware of that are both sour and hoppy…

  • Sur Citra
  • Sur Motueka
  • Sur Double Dry Hopped Citra
  • Sur Amarillo
  • Sur Blomst
  • Sur Equinox
  • Sur Mosaic
  • Sur Cascade x Cascade *
  • Sur Double Dry Hopped Mosaic *
  • Sur Galaxy *
  • Sur Centennial *

* haven’t managed to find yet

2. Collective Arts Jam up the Mash

For some reason this Canadian brew is relatively easy to find in some areas, but not others. For example, the Tampa Florida area has it in most well stocked shops, but it is nowhere to be found in the Carolinas). Collective Arts is very into their can designs and they change so don’t rely on the look of the can to identify it, look for the nice bold printed name instead.

3. Sierra Nevada Hop and Sour

A Seasonal released around August or September that seems to have first appeared in 2017. It sells out quick so grabbing a Crowler is advised. I sure wish they’d can or bottle it. I was hopeful Sierra Nevada might produce it as a regular when I first encountered it because they had a designed tap handle (image below) which is normally only done for beers they regularly produce.

4. Brothers Craft Brewing Citraspective

A collaboration with NoDa Brewing, it is unlikely this will appear again, but it sure was great. When I’ve occasionally found it listed in a shop’s inventory, it’s always been an error or outdated list of beers not being maintained.

5. Wooden Robot Hop Pebbles

This may have been a one time small batch. It was was locally distributed in the Charlotte area in 2018. I actually encountered it at a brewpub and when I called Wooden Robot to inquire about it, they told me they had run out months ago (so I guess I got lucky to have found it at all).

6. Braharmi Good Fight

Regularly produced and generally available, this is an excellent hoppy sour from Asheville, NC. It is relatively the most affordable of all those on this list and is just great. It can be found in many area shops from Asheville to Charlotte and you can get it by the case directly at Braharmi in Asheville— and I do!

7. Almanac Hoppy Sour Series

I’ve only had the Citra, but it was outstanding. This is both hard to find and is among the most expensive on this list, but like the To ol series makes it fun to search for.

  • Hoppy Sour: Amarillo
  • Hoppy Sour: Azacca
  • Hoppy Sour: Citra
  • Hoppy Sour: El Dorado
  • Hoppy Sour: Equinox
  • Hoppy Sour: Mandarina
  • Hoppy Sour: Mosaic
  • Hoppy Sour: Wakatu

8. Maximus Crystal Meth

Located in Utrecht, Netherlands Maximus makes a great hoppy sour with a “colorful” name. It was popular enough after it’s 2018 release to get canned in 2019.

9. Zebulon Dry Hopped Sour Ale (For Timothy Leary)

Zebulon releases a lot of small batch bottles and this one came to us in February of 2019.

10. Superliminal

Produced by Buxton Brewery in collaboration with Stillwater Artisanal.

11. Bells Larry’s Latest Sour Ale

I’d have stocked up if I realized it was a limited 2018 release. Bells makes a different “Larry’s Latest” brew annually but you may find a dusty bottle buried in a shop with a big selection (I’ve dug one up once or twice in 2019).

12. Sparkly Princess

Last but not least is this unsuspecting gem by Brewed by Holy City. While mildly embarrassing to purchase, it’s worth it.

What am I missing?

Cantillon Brewery Tour

Reservations are required and can be booked online at 9.50 per person.

Located at Rue du Lombard 1, 1000 Bruxelles, Belgium, the brewery is located about a half hour walk from the city center. However there are plenty of scooters and bicycles for rent if you are so inclined.

The tour served about 18 people and was delivered in English but other languages were also being delivered in separate tours such as in French.

They naturally took us through the brewing process and explained that most all of equipment is well over 100 years old and the recipe on which their beers are based is 6000 years old.

The tour focused on the production of not just regular beers but they’re specialty Lambic and Geuze brews.  The tour took an hour and ended with two tasters. One was their base lambic and for the there was a choice of the kriek, framboise, or gueze.

There was a lot of merchandise available shirts, coasters, posters, glasses, and of course several bottles to go. Volume discounts were available. I picked up a three pack for €15 that included a kriek, a framboise, and a gueze.

Sour to the People

Hi-Wire Brewing at Golden Belt hosted the first annual “Sour to the People” beer festival on Saturday, June 22 at their Taproom in Durham, NC. Feature 20 nationwide and local breweries poured some great sour and wild ales. Live music by the CJ Baker Band plus four local Durham Food Trucks were available.

Entry Included a commemorative glass and 3 beer tokens. Additional beer tokens were on sale for $3 each. Each beer was to be a 4oz pour (per token) but I’m happy to report most were pouring 5-6 ounces.

It didn’t get off to the best start, as it looked like it would rain and the line to get in moved painfully slow. It took me just over a half hour to get in and I watched to see when the line finally died and it was about 7pm.

All 20 breweries were in a single tent in the middle. Hi-wire had a tent of their own off to the size pouring 6 different beers from bottles. Some breweries were pouring from kegs, but most were from bottles. The brewery itself was open for business as usual with lots of indoor games inside.

Broo’ers Festival

Not quite a legit beer fest here but it was an oasis in a sea of Pabst Blue Ribbon for those attending Bonnaroo 2019 so I wanted to give it some quick coverage: A set of 24 different breweries were ready to pour including some highlights such as Bhramari , Lagunitas, Hi-Wire, New Holland, Brooklyn and others. Asheville, NC was well represented! You could buy tokens at the front or pay by credit card (or wristband). Each had one or two, but the good ones sold out after a couple of days and eventually breweries like Bhramari had nothing. This was the one area where the souvenir cup didn’t get a dollar discount, but they sold full and half pours for a reasonable price. They were all set up in a nice large wooden tent at the edge of the shops, central to multiple stages, with wood floors and decorated with fake hops.

This was something they had done the previous year as well so, hopefully this is was a big enough success to continue going forward– it seemed to be doing well enough.
